東漢郡國圖. [Tōkan gunkoku-zu]. [Counties and Provinces of Eastern Han].

(circa1855). Stock ID #157985

Very attractive colour woodblock map of China during the Eastern Han period. Central vertical crease. A few tiny holes but overall a very good and attractive copy. 36 x 47cm. This attractive coloured woodblock map of China during the Eastern Han Period (25 AD - 220 AD) was published in a series of maps issued in the historical atlas of China, 唐土歴代州郡沿革図 (Tōdo rekidai shūgun enkaku-zu) which translates as "Maps of China Representing Historical Changes of Provinces and Counties". This very popular work was edited by 長久保赤水 Nagakubo Sekisui (1717-1801) and was published in a number of editions from 1789 to the end of the Edo period. Egawa Yoshihiro 江川美啓 carved the blocks for these colourful beguiling maps which show place names in rectangular boxes and counties and districts in oval shaped boxes. There are some small variations between the editions and it seems likely from the appearance of the compass (showing the earthly branches as well as the four points of the compass) to the left of the map that this copy was published in one of the editions published in the 1850s.
