10 full page black and white collotypes, original light card wrappers with coloured string ties, paper title label upper wrapper. Wrappers a little foxed, lower corners of 7 leaves and lower wrapper stained, lower corner lower cover chipped. This copy has been folded causing a vertical crease. A good secondhand copy. 38 x 53.5cm. This book is a collotype reproduction of the earliest surviving example of Chinese narrative painting Gu Kaizhi's Admonitions of the Court Instructress which is now in the British Museum. Gu Kaizhi (c.345-406) was a legendary Chinese painter in the Jin Dynasty (265-420), who excelled at figure painting using delicate, fine lines. Modern scholarship now dates the scroll held in the British Museum as a copy from the 5th to 8th century. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 157986).
