Oldham. 2 folding maps, one with colour, xxi + 192 + viipp, index, hinges starting, some mild insect damage front endpapers, good copy in original cloth. In his introduction C.E.A.W. Oldham (Charles Evelyn Arbuthnot William Oldham) writes that he believes Buchanan's work to be the first published account of the Shahabad district, a Bhojpuri speaking district located in western Bihar, along the border with Uttar Pradesh. "The wholly unmerited oblivion into which Buchanan's valuable researches passed for so many years was largely due to two causes, the assumption of the name Hamilton after his retirement from India and the neglect of the East India Company" who did not publish his work. A "judicious selection" of Buchanan's work incorporated by Montgomery Martin into "Martin's Eastern India" without acknowledgement nine years after the author's death.
