The construction of the railway had been initiated as a route of military supply, part of the Russian expansion into Central Asia and of keen interest to Britain in the "Great Game" regional struggle for influence. Eighteen engravings on three separate leaves 40.5 x 30.5 cm, (one trimmed at the margin and slightly narrower), unrelated text and advertisements on the versos (including a two column blurb for Fergus Hume's second novel "Madame Midas" headlined "An Australian novel, of which 147,000 copies have been sold in six weeks"), in very good condition.
