Two photograph personal photograph albums from the collection of long-term Hong Kong resident William Stewart. Keen photographer, William Stewart, was an employee of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in Hong Kong and Shanghai in the period between 1930s and the 1970s. These two albums portray countryside, urban environments, people together with s few photographs of those he knew and worked with in the pre-War and immediately post- WWII period.

1. 80 small approximately 6 x 8cm black and white snapshots in black cloth covered photograph album "From My Camera" in gilt upper cover. Although the leaves are numbered 1 to 30, 10 leaves have been removed. Descriptions of each photo laid down onto the endpapers, a line runs through the description of the photos that have been removed. Sellotape repairs to binding where leaves have been removed, upper hinge split. Album measures 18 x 24cm.

At the end of the typed description of each photograph in the first album, William Stewart states "An interesting collection taken between 1933 and 1938, when I went on my first home leave. In those days foreign staff served 5 years without a break, and then were granted one years home leave, half of which was on half-pay. Today (1972) all fairly senior staff get annual leave of some 6 weeks, flying both ways. Pre-war all travelled by sea, via the Suez, or, if serving in north China one could return to UK by the Trans Siberian Railway!"

2. 107 small black and white snapshots in album laid down on 12 leaves and both endpapers. The photographs in the body of the album measure approximately 6 x 8cm whereas the 13 on the endpapers vary from approximately 6 x 8cm to 13.5 x 8.5cm in size, patterned card covers, captions in white and blue ink. Minor wear covers, very good. Album measures 19 x 28.5cm

On the inside front cover a series of three small snapshots form a delightful small detailed panorama of Cheung Chau. In the body of the album photographs taken on a journey from Great Britain to Hong Kong in 1933 show Port Said, a number of images taken on board P & O Liner Ranchi, the Suez Canal, Aden, Bombay, Colombo, Penang, Singapore, Johore, Canton, the final 52 images are of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong images dated 1933 - 1937 show a dragon procession, the harbour, Sir Wm Peel on horseback, views from Stewart's office window at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, the Cricket club, mess etc.
The eight photographs in photo corners on the lower endpaper taken later in 1946 are photos of Stanley Prison, graves at Stanley and a photograph of friends and another of showing the colonial style verandah of their house in 1941. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 159525).
