Colourful children's magazine in original wrappers, 60pp, illustrated in colour throughout. Very good copy. 25.8 x 18cm. This heavily illustrated magazine for young children, Kodomo ebanashi コドモエバナシ [Children's Picture Book] (Vol.5, number 11) was issued on the 1st of July 1942. The theme of this issue is the Malayan Campaign with a particular focus on the Battle of Singapore, February 1942. "Occupation of Singapore: Strong Japanese Army" the main story runs from pages 2 - 24. The illustrators of this feature story are: Suzuki Gyosui 鈴木御水 [1898-1982], Sekiya Yō 關谷陽 [1902-88], Yanagawa Gōichi 梁川剛一 [1902-86], Iiduka Reiji 飯塚羚兒 [1904-2004], Itō Kikuzō 伊藤幾久造 [1901-85], Takai Teiji 高井貞二 [1911-86], Matsuno Kazuo 松野一夫 [1895-1973]. The first illustration by Suzuki shows the landing on Kota Bharu on 8 December 1941 which was the beginning of the campaign. The illustration by Itō Kikuzō (pp.10-11) shows a Japanese bicycle unit advancing in the heavy rain. The illustration by Takai Teiji (pp.14-15) shows the Japanese landing parties crossing the Johore Strait to Singapore and the illustration by Matsuno Kazuo (pp.22-23) shows a Japanese officer leading the British surrender party.
