Colour manuscript map illustrating the route of the American fleet led by Commodore Perry after arriving off Uraga on the 3rd of June, 1853 (July 8 on the Western calendar). 16 ink ships are shown. Map is orientated with north to the right. 20.7 x 45cm. Vertical fold, a little minor creasing. Very good. Perry's fleet consisted of four warships and two of which were paddle steamers. The notes written on the map tell us that from the 3rd to the 9th of June (Japanese date) the fleet stayed off Uraga and when the four ships formed a column the two steamers were always in the middle; in the afternoon of 9 June all the four ships anchored north of Cape Futtsu; in the morning of 10th the fleet came off Sugita [in Yokohama] and eight or nine crew members landed; in the afternoon of the 10th of June one steamer came off Haneda; and in the morning of the 11th of June the fleet came south of Cape Futtsu. The Edo government allowed the American delegate to land on Kurihama on 14 June: "The delegate from the two steamers landed on Kurihama." (When referring to this item please quote stockid 159848).
