A Late Qing (Tongzhi Xinwei Year, 1871) Chinese land transfer contract handwritten on Chinese rice paper in calligraphy. Tears at folds some of which have been mended with cellotape on the reverse, small tears at edges, not affecting the text, two square stamps in the centre. Text in traditional Chinese, sheet measures 47 x 46.6cm. This land transfer contract states that three "Tangshu" 堂叔 (uncles from father's side) are selling the land they once inherited to their "Tangzhi" 堂侄 (nephew from father's side). They all carried the surname "Zeng" 曾. Though a transaction conducted within the family, the contract is still quite formal and clear. It lists: the land will be transferred, 112 silver yuan will be paid (the amount had been negotiated between three parties), names of the witness (two wives, one mother and one sister in law of the Zeng family), the middle man Zeng Wendui and names the scrivener, Chen Yingze, who is not a family member to avoid disputes.
