The photographs range in date from the 12th to the 16th of May. Collection of photographs from the tour of Japan, Thailand and South Vietnam United States Vice President Spiro Agnew made during May 1972. Agnew visited Japan to take part in the return of Okinawa to Japanese control. An important day as although the government shifted to the control of the Okinawa Prefectural Government of Japan and the population saw such noticeable changes as the currency changing from U.S. dollars to Japanese yen, the transition was far from complete. The American bases remained. The May 15th Okinawa Reversion Ceremony sparked protests at the time and each year the Okinawa Reversion Ceremony is remembered by a peace march where the demonstrators make clear their unhappiness with the continued presence of the United States bases on their soil.
