Tōkaidō Road comic album with selection from from the humourous novel about the Tōkaidō road by Jippensha Ikku 十返舍一九 (1765 - 1831) frequently translated into English as "A Shanks' Mare Tour of the Tōkaidō".
This extremely popular novel, originally published in parts between 1802 - 1809, tells of two Tokyo travellers, Yaji and Kita, and their trip along the Tōkaidō. "As in the fictional guidebooks of the past, the two buffoons, Yaji and Kita, leave Edo with permits to make a pilgrimage to the Shinto shrine at Ise but actually are on a quest for sexual and gastronomic pleasures. The text is filled with ribald sexual puns about the homosexual relationship between the two characters and their pursuit of liaisons with women. Much of the comedy centers on Yaji and Kita’s feelings of superiority, being sophisticates from the capital, as they meet and do business with local people along the Tōkaidō. The joke, however, is usually on them." The Tōkaidō Road: Journeys through Japanese Books and Prints in the Collections of Princeton University - Nicole Fabricand-Person.
