Hand coloured copper engraved Japanese world map on the Mercator projection, folds into original cloth covered card covers with title label, scale not given but supplemented by latitude and longitude. Upper section: a world map; lower section: explanatory notes, legend and publication details. Decorative national flags of the world border the map. A preface by a French-speaking linguist 村上義茂 [Murakami Yoshishige] dated Meiji 3 (1870) at the lower edge of the map. Worming across the map neatly repaired with Japanese tissue on reverse, some small holes at folds, little browning, a little insect damage to title label, lacking paper portfolio. Text in Japanese. 98 x 121cm folding to 17 x 25 cm. The considerable amount of text beneath the map gives brief geographical descriptions such as major cities, railroad networks, measurement, currencies, etc. Explanatory note states this map was based on a map published in Meiji 3 (1870) by the American ミッチェール [Micchēru], most likely the prolific geographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1790-1868).
