Six sheets each showing 10 watercolour designs for hyakunin isshu cards - 60 images in total. Sheets measure 24 x 34cm. Sheets numbered in pencil lower corner, numbers 5 -8 missing. Some occasional browning. Overall very good. It is unclear if these sheets were drafts for the making of a set of Hyakunin Isshu cards or were copied from existing cards. Of the hundred picture cards in a set of cards these sheets show 60 images. When compared with a contemporary set of cards it is interesting to see that the order of this collection is different, additionally a number of the images show the subject of the card facing a different direction.
"Hyakunin Isumi" is a collection of poetry compiled about 730 years ago by Fujiwara Sadaie, who was a poet of the Kamakura period. Since the paintings of Hyakunin Ishibashi are drawn according to each era, the background of the era can be seen on the cards. In this case it can be seen that some of the cards were influenced by the Meiji era cards. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 162262).
