Long colour printed image by Ōta Saburō 太田三郎 issued as a souvenir of the Sengu festival which is held every 20 years at The Ise Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮 Ise Jingū), in Ise, Mie Prefecture. 19.7 x 108cm. Folds into 20.4 x 10.7cm. Issued as supplement to Fujin Kurabu 婦人倶楽部 Vol. 10, no. 10. Envelope worn and marked but image in very good condition. Every 20 years the Ise Grand Shrine holds a big festival called the Sengu or Shiraisshiki. At that time the shrine buildings at Naikū and Gekū, as well as the Uji Bridge are completely rebuilt in another area within the huge complex of 125 shrines that comprises the Ise Grand Shrine. This ancient rebuilding festival which honours the Shinto belief of death and renewal has been running for over 1300 years. This souvenir image is from the 1964 Sengu.
