Illustrated with black and white photographic images throughout, 221pp, 27.5cm x 19.5cm, very good copy in original glassine dustjacket in slipcase. This remarkable volume is made up of images of photographs from the collection of Shimazu Hisataka's collection and the Shuseikan. The Shimazu family an important old Japanese family based in Satsuma were in place until the end of the Edo period. These photographs show Satsum at the end of Edo Period and at the time of the Meiji restoration. They include not only portrait and landscape photographs but also images of pictures, bronze statues and important documents. Particularly interesting are the number of historical photographs such as the arrival of Commodore Perry. Due to its geographic position Satsuma has had more foreign contact than most other Japanese regions. These photographs illustrate this with a number of images of Japanese students who went to the United States, France, and the UK, diaries using Roman characters, English-Japanese dictionaries, and Western types of restaurants.
