がんろうぶつ. [Ganrōbutsu]. [Illustration of Oriental Zodiac]

椿本研三, Meiji 27 [1894]. Stock ID #163363

Print of the 12 animals of the Japanese zodiac printed in maroon ink on washi, 24.5 x 32.7 cm. Some worming in lower section, some kanji a little out of register, but generally good. A rather strange image of a man firing a gun at the animals of the zodiac. The title "Ganrōbutsu" which means "this is a toy" is hard to interpret in this context although it appears as rather a rather dark use of the zodiac. What was the meaning of this image? Intriguing, given that 1894 when this print was made was the year of the horse, whereas in this image a dog and a chicken hold the central position.
