Stock ID #164121 The considerable amount of text beneath the map gives brief geographical descriptions such as major cities, railroad networks, measurement, currencies, etc. Explanatory note states this map was based on a map published in Meiji 3 (1870) by the American ミッチェール [Micchēru], most likely the prolific geographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1790-1868). Hand coloured copper engraved Japanese world map on the Mercator projection, folded, missing original cloth covered card covers, scale not given but supplemented by latitude and longitude. Upper section: a world map; lower section: explanatory notes, legend and publication details. Decorative national flags of the world border the map. A preface by a French-speaking linguist 村上義茂 [Murakami Yoshishige] dated Meiji 3 (1870) at the lower edge of the map. This map was engraved by 松田緑山 [Matsuda Ryokuzan]. Very light brown stain upper edge, occasional tears along folds. Text in Japanese. 123.5 x 99cm folding to 25 x 17 cm.
