Black and white photographic illustrations and colour illustrations. 30 cm x 22.3cm. No. 112 published on November 1922. No. 115 published on 1 February 1923 - Taisho 12. Some ocassional foxing to margins and covers. The original metal staples which were rusted have been removed and are now sewn with silk, spines are a little worn with the odd chip but generally very good.

Two issues of the journal "Rekishi Shashin" (Historic Photographs)- no. 112 (Nov. 1922) and no. 115 (February 1923). The journal was published from 1913 onwards by entrepreneur Akiyoshi Zentaro (1866-1924) and was one of Japan's first graphic magazines focusing on the use of photographic illustrations. The magazines, which were aimed at a broad popular audience, feature brightly coloured covers and traditional colour woodblock frontispieces, followed by black-and-white photos illustrating a wide range of newsworthy topics, including political events, sports and popular culture.

The eclectic contents give a wonderful insight into early 1920s Japanese popular culture. No. 112 features photo spreads on a visit by Prince Higashinomiya to Lake Kawaguchi, and an American daredevil who performs acrobatic stunts suspended from an aeroplane, the damage and injuries caused by a gas tank explosion in Osaka, an outbreak of cholera in Japan, the performance of US tennis players in the Davis Cup, the engagement of Crown Prince Hirohito and Pincess Nagako, the presentation of awards for traditional sword making, a railway accident in London, and America's growing naval strength.

No. 115 covers topics including women's fencing, a prominent US woman billiard player, US stage beauty Dorothy Knapp, the effects of an recent earthquake on Kyushu's Shimabara Peninsula, a visit by former French Prime Minister Clemeceau to the United States, a fancy dress dance at the Imperial Hotel, an Ikebana exhibition by Osaka Women's Association, the arrest of a Japanese pirate gang who had murdered the crew of a Russian ship off Karafuto, US military aircraft on display in San Diego, Prince Chichibu greeting new Japanese military recruits, fire brigade training in Tokyo and Osaka, a high school boating competition in Tokyo, Sumo events in Tokyo and amusing photos of interactions between people and animals.
