膠州湾占領双六. [Kōshūwan senryō sugoroku]. Sugoroku - The Occupation of Jiaozhou Bay

[Hakubunkan]. 博文館, Taisho 3 [1914]. Stock ID #164511

Coloured sugoroko, folded, browning particularly visible on reverse, few closed tears and tiny holes at folds, neatly repaired with acid-free tape, good copy. 54.5 x 79cm. This colourful sugoroku depicts the occupation of the former German concession at Jiaozhou Bay in Qingdao by Japanese and British troops in 1914, soon after the start of the First World War. The images, by illustrator Morita Taisaburo, show soldiers advancing through the rain, a meeting between a Japanese and British officer, battle scenes around the bay, a military field hospital, ships threatened by floating mines, and highly caricatured Chinese civilians fleeing the fighting. In the centre of the sugoroku sheet is a map of the main fortifications of Qingdao, at the entrance to the bay. Occupying this area gave Japan a significant foothold on the Shandong Pnenisula, which it retained until 1922. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 164511).
