Coloured and black and white full page illustrations, fold out illustration, vii + 152, errata loosely inserted. Very good hardback copy in dustjacket. 24 x 33 cm. "For the first time in sixty years, the back of "Princes of the House of Timur" has been exposed, enabling new conclusions to be drawn concerning the conservation history of this work. This volume contains a variety of photographs and X-rays, which in some cases confirm the findings of the art historians and in others beg the question of how many times the painting was retouched in the past four hundred and fifty years. One conclusion is inescapable, however. Such a large painting which was so thoroughly renovated on at least one occasion held a seemingly totemic significance for its imperial Mughal owners over a period of nearly eighty years. This volume demonstrates that "Princes of the House of Timur" retains its key position in the History of Mughal Painting. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 164825).
