Black and white illustrations, 310pp, notes, endpapers and edges lightly foxed, dustjacket browned with loss, a prior owner's signature front free endpaper, still good. Written in the early 19th century during the reign of Empress Wu Tse-tien this Chinese classic is essentially a social commentary and satire, as well as an historical romance, a fairy tale and allegory. Lin Yutang has described this work as "The Ching Hua Yuan (Flowers in the Mirror) stands in a class by itself among the more outstanding Chinese novels. Clothed in the form of a book of travels to strange countries, it offers the author, Li Ju-Chen, a chance for displaying his unique, refreshing ideas and satirical comments on human nature. In this sense it is like Gulliver's Travels." (When referring to this item please quote stockid 165500).
