"Glimpses of the Yangtze Gorges" is a book for the general public - full of interest and teeming with Legend and Chinese folklore - descriptions of the great gorges and the wonderful journey from Ichang to Chungking; interesting old towns - Hamlets, Pagodas, Temples and everything that go to make a journey through China one of the most fascinating trips in the world. Following there is a chapter on the various types of Junks - all being weird and wonderful: their masters and crews - the methods of handling and the thrilling experiences gone through when running or going up the rapids. The third chapter, dealing with the modern steamer built for navigating this 'fierce' River, gives us descriptions of the steamers - their cargo-carrying capacities and the requirements necessary to make a successful vessel for the run - the possibilities of the future, etc. The work is so attractively written that I feel that any one who reads it will long to make the trip."
