Folded sugoroku game, colour woodblock print on washi paper, 49 x 65cm, folded. A 11.5 x 2.5cm hole in the middle of the sheet has been mended many years ago with washi, as has a chip at the left margin, some soiling visible particularly in margins. Some creasing and wear with minor loss along the folds and edges. Although the condition of this sheet is poor, it is nevertheless a very interesting and attractive image.

This beautiful sugoroku game was produced by Daimaru Gofukuten in Osaka as part of their promotion materials. Daimaru Gofukuten began selling kimonos in 1717. In the early 20th century they ventured into corporatized business successfully established a chain of stores by the late 1920s. In recent years, Daimaru department stores expanded its network throughout Japan and overseas.

This game starts with a woman in ancient historical attire and progresses chronologically through the history to the 1910s. The sheet has delicate red tie-dye background and the panels depict young women in colourful period kimonos and hair styles. This delightful game promotes kimonos by inviting the young female players to imagine themselves in these beautiful garments from times past while dreaming of wearing a beautiful kimono of their own which, of course, could be purchased at Daimaru Gofukuten! A lovely advertising game which informs the players about women's and Japanese fashion history.
