Chinese propaganda booklet about the student protests in Beijing, published immediately prior to the Tiananmen Square Incident (June 3rd to 4th, 1989), by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China. 68pp, original wrappers, 4.7cm closed tear with light creasing lower wrapper repaired by archival tape. Text in Chinese. 18.6 x 13.1cm. This booklet opens with an editorial from People's Daily in April 26th 1989 titled "We Must Take a Clear-cut Stand against Disturbances" defining the student protests in Beijing as a destabilising anti-party revolt. This article, the first authoritative document from the top leadership and a turning point, really upset the student group and led on to much larger scale student protests. It was followed by numerous public speeches given by top government officials including Li Peng, Nie Rongzhen, Xu Xiangqian, Deng Yingchao, Chen Yun, Li Xiannian and Wan Li between May 19th to May 27th 1989. The booklet also includes the orders of the Martial Law implementation in various parts of Beijing issued by Li Peng (May 20th 1989) and by Beijing mayor Chen Xitong (May 20th 1989). It closes with an article written by an anonymous 3rd year university student from outside Beijing, encouraging those students who were unwilling to leave, to go home.
