[c 1910.]. Stock ID #170347 Martin Anderson (1854-1932). was a Scottish artist, cartoonist, postcard illustrator and publisher. The Scottish weekly magazine 'Quiz' published his first drawn cover in 1881 under the name Cynicus. He went on to draw and paint hundreds of humorous cartoons many ridiculing the clergy and campaigning for social justice while being at the same time very funny. He was the staff artist for News of the Week' and the first such artist to be employed by any newspaper in Britain. Having had a successful career - he died in poverty. An original hand painted cartoon, signed 'Cynicus'. Colour illustration laid on stiffened card. Blind-stamped "Hand Painted Copyright" at lower left corner. This print titled 'The murmur of the shell' depicts pacific islanders gathered around a smoking cannonball in curiosity, poking at it with a stick.
Overall size approx. 23 x 29.5cm, image size approx. 15.5 x 21.5cm., some faint foxing to the border of the backing board.
