Washington D.C. U.S. Army. 1944. Stock ID #170725

Detailed double sided fabric map. Pei-Ping (Peking) Sheet shows Gulf of Chihli, Huang Ho (the Yellow River). Ryojun (Port Arthur) shows Shantung, China and the Yellow Sea (Huang Hai)and part of North Korea. Currents and winds shown. Some topographic detail. Legend includes roads, railways, geographic features including the Great Wall, population of cities and villages. Scale 1:1,000,000. Maps such as these were issued to defence force personnel during conflict. They were hidden, for example sewn into their jackets, sealed into cans of foods etc, so that in the event of an enforced landing over enemy territory the servicemen would be able to avoid capture and make their way to safe territory. Evasion maps were light, durable and did not rustle due to being printed on silk or fabric rather than paper. Fascinating for the detail they record these maps also bring into sharp focus the risks that were taken by these young men. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 170725).
