頭蓋骨と昭和天皇. [Zugaikotsu to Shōwa Tennō].
[Skulls and Emperor Showa]

[Japan]. 1982 - 1982- 1983. No. 43 from a limited edition of 90. Stock ID #171038

Colour lithograph and silk screen print, 77 x 54.5 cm, artist's signature and dated 82-83 in pencil. Very good copy.

This artwork is a part of Oura Nobuyuki's series of 14 lithograph and silk screen works, with a title "Holding Perspective". They were produced between 1982 and 1985. This print features a few sculls and human heads and Emperor Showa with peony motifs in the background.

Oura worked on this series while he was living in New York in the 1980s. This group of his works caused great controversy in Japan when exhibited at an exhibition in Toyama in 1986. Years later in 2019, Oura's visual work featuring a print, キノコ雲と昭和天皇, [Mushroom Cloud and Emperor Showa], from the series was presented at the Aichi Triennale Exhibition of "After the Non-Freedom of Expression" in 2019 and again there was an outcry. Oura's work, together with the works of some other artists, caused a large controversy resulting in the closure of the exhibition after only three days.
