[The Birth of Venus + Emperor Showa].

[Japan]. 1982- 1983. No. 42 from a limited edition of 90. Stock ID #171040

Colour lithograph and silk screen print, 77 x 54.5 cm, artist's signature in pencil. Very good copy.

This art work is one in the series of Oura Nobuyuki's 14 lithograph and silk screen works titled "Holding Perspective" produced between 1982 and 1985. This print features young Showa Emperor, classic Japanese painting with 2 angels from Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus".

Oura worked on this series while he was living in New York in the 1980s. This group of his works caused great controversy in Japan when exhibited at an exhibition in Toyama in 1986. Years later in 2019, Oura's visual work featuring a print, キノコ雲と昭和天皇, [Mushroom Cloud and Emperor Showa], from the series was presented at the Aichi Triennale Exhibition of "After the Non-Freedom of Expression" in 2019 and again there was an outcry. Oura's work, together with the works of some other artists, caused a large controversy resulting in the closure of the exhibition after only three days.
