Full page colour plates throughout, 80pp, cloth covers worn on edges, 26 x 19cm, characters on title page traced onto tissue guard, prior owner's names on front and back endpapers, a little staining along upper edges of leaves, some light soiling. Patterned cloth covered boards torn with loss upper corner and stained on lower half of lower board. Nevertheless a striking work.

This book is a fascinating and fun collection on Edo style Happi jacket designs in full colour. The book also includes designs for store aprons, business logos, and writing styles. The illustrations are in vivid colours.

Shirushi hanten or Happi jackets were traditionally worn by tradesmen, such as carpenters and gardeners, from Edo period until the early Showa period. They are still worn occasionally for festivals and special occasions. Some businesses ordered their own jackets with bold designs and business names. Similarly, some shop assistants wore distinctive store aprons. This book displays 54 variations of Happi jackets, 24 business crests, 8 store aprons, and 5 store curtains. In addition, different styles of fonts for jacket lapels are also displayed.
