This 1937 text on civics education (kokumin kyoiku) for girls gives fascinating insights into attitudes to women's education in late 1930s Japan. In keeping with the political mood of the times, it is highly nationalistic, and emphasises the importance of teaching girls to develop the distinctively Japanese form of womanhood appropriate to a country which holds a unique and proud place amongst the nations of the world.

By contrast with individualistic western nations, we are told, Japan is a family state, where education takes place in the family and in young men's and young women's organizations, as well as in schools. Women as mothers therefore play a particularly central role in passing on good moral values to children. Individual chapters deal with issues of physical and mental development and the home environment and discipline, as well as school education and social education through youth groups. The first colour plate depicts Empress Shoken (Emperor Meiji's wife) addressing female school girls at the opening of Atomi Girls' School. Two other colour plates show samples of children's toys based on Froebel and Montessori education principles.
