Colour folded map showing the region around Shanghai and Nanjing with a very large inset map of Shanghai/Wusong, and a second of Nanjing with its major buildings named. Japanese diplomatic representations are indicated. Even browning, small holes at folds, occasional tiny tears on margins. Previous owner's chop upper right. A good copy of an historically interesting map. 38.5 x 53.5cm.

This map of the Shanghai - Nanjing region, was published as a supplement to the Ōsaka Mainichi Shinbun newspaper issue of the 1st of September, 1937. The Battle of Shanghai had begun only a couple of weeks earlier, heralding the beginning of the China-Japan War, and indeed, increasingly now recognised as the beginning of World War II. Nanking (Nanjing), at that time the capital of the Chiang Kai-shek government, was only a few months away from the terrible Nanking Massacre which took place over the 6 weeks following December 13, 1937.
