東京. [Tokyo]. 村山合名東京朝日新聞会社. [Murayama Gōmei Tōkyō Asahi Shinbun Kaisha]. 明治 41 [ 1908]. Stock ID #172077

38pp, English text, original wrappers with ring binder holes at margins, the attractive coloured upper cover indicates strong bond between the US and Japan by means of an illustration of their two flags knotted together. A little light browning but otherwise very good. 15 x 11cm,

This fascinating booklet with an attractive cover was produced for "the use of young students volunteering as companions for the officers and crew of the American Fleet" in 1908. The fleet was the Great White Fleet of the American naval battle ships, which went around the globe between 1907 and 1909. The fleet sailed into Yokohama on October 1908, when this booklet was published.

Even though this booklet is titled "English Phrases', it is very different from ordinary travel phrase books. The text is entirely in English and follows an imaginary conversation between a Japanese guide and an American visitor during a tour of Tokyo. They visit various places and some historical incidents are discussed. Before the fleet's visit to Japan, there was a rumour of military tension between Japan and the United States. However, once the fleet arrived in Japan, they were welcomed enthusiastically and over 3000 American sailors went ashore to enjoy Japanese hospitalities. This booklet shows the enthusiasm among the Japanese public for the American visitors at the time.
