A striking and detailed copper engraved plan of Kanton, capital of the southern Chinese Province of Guangdong, with a view of the European and Chinese ships in the harbour from van der Aa's La Galerie Agreable du Monde. 28.6 x 18cm, with the plate mark - 29.5 x 18.8cm. Number B1 written neatly in ink within the margin. Light fold mark at the middle but a lovely clean image. Pieter van der Aa was born 1659 in Leiden, Holland. He started his own book publishing business when he was twenty-three. During fifty years of business, he published a huge amount of highly decorative maps and atlases. His career culminated with the publishing of his illustrated atlas of the world, the “Galerie Agreable du Monde” made up of 66 volumes, the largest book of prints ever published at that time. Only 100 copies are said to have been printed. He died 1733 in Leiden. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 172100).
