This book contains a selection of essays written by Lin Yutang for the "Little Critic". The author suggests that '..the "Sketches" be read for their sheer nonsense while one is on travel, the "Satires" be read during committee meetings with long-winded speakers for the purpose of keeping oneself awake, while the "Essays" should be read exactly for the opposite purpose of inducement to sleep, and for that purpose, this volume may be safely recommended for the bedside table'.
