Black and white photographic illustrations, unpaginated [131pp], text in Japanese and Chinese, hardback, 26 x 18.5cm. Sewing split between gatherings and opening in other places but still holding. Lower margins throughout and lower section of fore edges first leaves tide stained.

A book of black-and-white photos of Manchuria, published by the information section of the Manchukuo government. The large and good-quality photographs focus on the landscape, people and performing arts of Manchuria, each section including a brief introduction in Japanese and Chinese.

The first two sections depict the changing Manchurian seasons and agricultural life, with some striking images of frost-covered landscapes, an ice sculpture, cherry blossoms, ploughing and harvesting etc. This is followed by a section entitled 'The Expressions of Ethnic Groups", starting with the smiling face of an elderly Chinese woman. The ethnic groups represented are not clearly indicated by the titles of the photos, but this section is clearly designed to highlight the ethnic diversity of Manchukuo. They include Chinese, Manchurians (some in traditional dress), Japanese, a Korean woman, Mongolians, and a number of Europeans (mostly Russian). There are two photos of the village of Romanovka, a community of emigrant Russian "Old Believers" who had fled to Manchuria from the Russian Far East. The final section focuses on traditional and modern artistic performances - among them traditional opera, puppetry, stilt walking, Russian balalaika performances, orchestral performances and brass bands.
