Hirasawa Hakuo was a physiognomic scholar during the Edo period and this 5 volume set, which was first published in 1851 and concentrates on facial and skull features was his best known work.

The books each cover a section of the face, such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears and its coverage even extending to the shapes of sexual organs! The author discusses the implications of one's characters and fortune based on physiognomy. A similar discussion on skull, palm and body shapes is carried out in detail. Each section is illustrated with interpretive captions. Hirasawa's analysis and discussion appears to be thorough and scholarly for its period.
