1920- 1922. Stock ID #172544

194 black and white photographs most laid down in what appears to be a handmade Japanese family photograph album with captions in Japanese. Most photographs are 5.5 x 8cm, some 8 x 10cm and two 11 x 15cm. The maroon card leaves of the album are friable, some are detached or beginning to detach, some are torn with loss or chipped at the lower edge.Twenty three photographs, which were probably laid down on missing last leaves of the album are loosely inserted. One of the loose photographs is torn in two. Some photographs show some mild fading, occasional spotting or browning and occasional creasing at corners. Although the album itself is in a poor state, the photographs are largely in good condition with occasional spotting or browning. Sold as a very interesting collection of photographs.

A fascinating family album or collection of photographs compiled by a Japanese family who travelled in Manchuria and Korea in the years 1920-22. Many of the photos are carefully labelled with place names, dates and personal names. There are photos of the South Manchurian Railway Company's Games in May, 1920 and several images of ceremonies at a South Manchurian Railway Company School near Dalian, as well as a photo of General Kawai Misao of the Kwantung Army, taken in 1921, and numerous photos taken in Gongzhuling, near Changchun, Piziwo now in Pikou Town, Pulandia District in Dalian. Other photographs show Yingkou, today a prefecture-level city in Liaoning Province, and a larger photograph (11 x 15cm) an image of a park known at the time as West Park of Dalian or Tiger Park (as it had a tiger enclosure) but later renamed to: Central Park (1926), Lenin Park (1947) and finally in 1949 to Labour Park. Sixteen of the photos also show the effects of a large storm in August 1921. A few photos show the family in Japan, with shots of various landmarks in Kyoto.

It seems likely that the photographer may have worked for the South Manchurian Railway Company, possibly as a teacher in one of their schools. The album also includes images of the family returning to Japan along the Korean / South Manchurian Railway from Shenyang to Andong and then through Pyongyang in February-March 1920, with lively pictures of places along the route, including a market and the railway station in Pyongyang; As well as striking images of Manchurian and Korean society in the 1920s, the album also contains numerous charming family photos of meals, games on the beach, children swimming etc.
