Striking Japanese poster, 72.5 x 51.5cm, folded, little worn at edges and along folds, a little soiling. Very good copy.

Published in 1942 this poster was issued as part of the Japanese Government's campaign to encourage its citizens to help the war effort by saving money. The slogan, "Defeat Britain and USA Again in Savings Battles!" is printed in large black Japanese characters. The ambitious savings goal for the year of 23 billion yen is printed in the background. This amount was so large that it was double the size of the Japanese government's annual budget at that time! The poster also assures the reader that life insurance and conscription insurance policies are suitable for long-term savings.

In order to achieve its goal of raising 23 billion yen, the Japanese Government established the National Savings Promotion Agency, and each prefecture was expected to achieve its government allocated savings goal. The Life Insurance Control Association co-sponsored the promotion and in order to increase savings, bank accounts, life insurance policies, conscription insurance policies, and postal bonds were heavily promoted to the Japanese population.
