[Current Situational Map of the US Navy: The Pacific under Threat].

[Japan]. 朝日新聞. [Asahi Shinbun]. Circa 1940. Stock ID #173010

Colour map, 51.5 x 73 cm. Some light creasing, few small damp stains. Paper browned and friable but has been neatly re-enforced at fold lines on the verso and along upper margin.

This pictorial map of the Pacific was apparently published in 1940 or early 1941 just prior to the Pacific War. It shows the region from India to the United States, where many fierce battles were to be fought between Japan and the Allies, almost as though predicting what was going to happen.

Hawaii is shown centrally with an accompanying comment about the large sum of money spent on defending Pearl Harbor. Two inset maps show Oahu and Manila. Midway, Wake and Manila are noted with some comments. Double lines across the Pacific indicate the US defence parameters emphasising to the Japanese viewer how strong the mapmaker felt the threat was.

Scarce. We have only been able to find one institutional holding of this map.
