This small book contains six pieces on Australia by Shiga Shigetaka (1863 - 1927), a Japanese geographer and thinker who travelled widely in the late 19th century. He visited Australia in 1886 during his trip around the Pacific and published a book, Nanyo Jiji (Current Situation in the Pacific) in 1887. Nanyo Jiji was one of the earliest works on Australia and the Pacific in Japan and the essays in this small book were originally published there. The essays cover pre-Federation Australia, trade, power relations in the Pacific and the future of Australia.

Chapter 5 mentions Sir Thomas McIlwraith of Queensland extensively as Shiga realised Sir Thomas visited Japan and stayed at Grand Hotel in Yokohama in 1888. He discusses Sir Thomas in the context of Australian or Queesland movement towards independence from Britain (p30-34).

This edition published during the Pacific War and both author and editor express their hope for better and friendlier cooperation between the two countries in the near future.
