Old Highways in China

London. Religious Tract Society. Paternoster Row. 1884. Stock ID #173301

Folding map of the provinces of Shantung and Chih-li, black and white frontispiece and 17 illustrations throughout the text. 227pp, plus 12 pages of illustrated advertisements for the Religious Tract Society's list of new illustrated books. Pictorial tan cloth stamped in gilt. Cloth at head and tail of spine tender. Inner gutter re-inforced with archival quality tape. Endpapers have some clear plastic from covering at some stage laid down on them and a handwritten prize dedication on the half-title page, still a very attractive copy.

Isabelle Williamson and her husband's missionary work took them on several journeys in the province of Cheh-Kiang in the mid 19th century before they moved to Shantung province when it was first opened to foreigners. In this volume she describes two journeys in this area recording everyday life rather than mission work.
