Volume I only. Large folding map of 'The Chinese Empire compiled for Native and Foreign Authorities.' with inset maps of the River Min to Fuhchau Fu: Map of the City of Canton & Adjacent Islands: The Island of Amoy. The map has had previously closed tears that have now been neatly repaired with archival tape. Black and white portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard and illustrated title page, 11 illustrations some full-page including a map of Peking. xxii + 590pp. Original yellow decorated paper covered boards, rebacked with black linen cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, top edge gilt. Endpapers browned and an armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Verso of the title page has an ink stamp dated 1939 - The Peabody Institute, but no other library markings. Some light offsetting and very faint damp marks in some areas but generally a clean and firm copy. 19.5 x 12.7cm

This enormous survey of China covers almost every aspect of Chinese life including law, education, literature, architecture, science, industry, history, missions and foreign relations.
