Accordion-folding brochure with stiff card covers, illustrated in colour, 19 x 12.5 cm (folded); 308 cm (expanded), blue-toned photographic illustrations, 24 panels on three joined sheets, each showing 2 hairstyles from 2 different angles, text instructions and diagrams printed on the verso, in very good condition.

This wonderfully illustrated hairstyle brochure was a supplement to August issue of Fujioka (Women's World) in 1931. It depicts 50 different hairstyles for women and girls, each with 2 photographs taken from different angles. Instructions and diagrams for particular hairstyles are printed on reverse. Some of the hairstylists here, including Yoshiyuki Aguri and Ushiyama May, were top stylists of the period.

The hairstyles pictured range from the traditional, with the models in traditional Japanese dress, to more contemporary Western styles of the late 1920s, with the models in Western dress. Shorter hairstyles for girls are also featured. By the late 1930s perms and waived hairstyles were regarded as symbols of decadence and discouraged. The second Sino-Japanese war led to a new austerity with goods becoming more scarce.

This remarkable piece of ephemera offers a glimpse of Japanese women's fashion and hairstyles in early 1930s Japan.
