Kanhoji Angre, the admiral of the Marathas, established it as the capital of his coastal territory in 1698. The lengthy key details all the built features including the Admiral's palace (the largest building on the plan). The Angre clan lost control of Vijaydurg Fort to a British-Peshwa alliance in the early months of 1756 during the Battle of Vijaydurg. When referring to this item please quote stockid 174892.
Engraved chart on laid watermarked paper, 27.5 x 44.6 cm (plate mark), detailed panel key, original folds, small crease to the outer corner, inner margin trimmed to the plate mark at the lower edge, paper slightly toned, but a fine dark impression in remarkably good condition.
