Large colourful folding map of East Asia, 79 x 109cm. Some browning, soiling on margins particularly in one section, some neat mending at folds, reverse of map browned particularly on the two panels which are exposed when the map is folded. Although showing some signs of use and age this map is nevertheless full of interest and overall gives a pleasing impression.

This colourful pictorial map published in 937 shows the dynamic military situation in East Asia from the Japanese point of view. The map covers Japan, Taiwan, China, and the Soviet Union, and shows pictorially existing tensions along the borders where numerous military personnel and machines are placed. Information about the Soviet and Chinese military powers are also included.

These pictorial propaganda maps conveyed the extent of the Japanese government's ambitions to the Japanese population, the charming cartoon style images of wildlife and other natural resources, industries and historical landmarks indicating the anticipated gains of the Japanese foreign policy. Images of warships, military planes and personnel indicate the progress of the Sino-Japanese War. The area under Japanese control is marked by blue dotted lines. Interestingly, positions of the military forces, transport routes, defence structures, and radio transmission stations are also marked on the map. An inset world map at lower left shows the area covered.
The text box at right is titled "Current State of Affairs in East Asia." The legend read right details the coloured shading on the map. Read right to left these are:

Dark yellow: Japan
Pale yellow: Manchukuo
Red: Soviet Union (Russia)
Pink: Sovietised area
Purple: Republic of China (China)
Grey: China (North China Buffer State, where a special relationship with Japan is emerging)
Green: Jidong autonomous zone.
