In this book, he explains how the British political system works, covering parliament, regional governments, military, and judiciary in eighteen chapters. This translation was published in 1868 when Japan officially opened the country to the outside world and was having to cope with the Western powers while building its nation. At this time intellectuals and politically minded Japanese people were keen to learn from other countries, including Britain, this book helping fill the need. Volume I: 53 double folded feaves; Volume II: 41 double folded leaves; Volume III: 47 double folded leaves, 24.5 x 17.6 cm, four hole stab binding. Lacks title labels on upper covers, yellow paper covered card covers soiled, otherwise good.
The translator, Suzuki Tadakazu (1845-1909) learned English in Japan under a Japanese instructor and was engaged in translating English newspaper articles into Japanese. This translation was one of his first published works. Later he worked for the government and was engaged in education. He was also a publisher and a local politician as his career progressed.
