Brightly coloured large pictorial folding map in original envelope with totems of Manchuria and Korea illustrated on the cover, inset map showing the region upper left. 109 x 78 cm Folded 30 x 22.5 cm. Some minor very occasional browning. A very good copy of a handsome map.

A large and colourful map printed in 1930, showing 'Mansen' (Manchuria-Korea) and its products. In the later 1920s and 1930s, Japan increasingly used the toponym 'Mansen', combining Manchuria and Korea, to highlight the separation of Manchuria from the rest of China, and its integration with the Japanese colony of Korea. This map is a striking visual representation of this concept.

The map covers the Korean Peninsula, Manchuria and Mongolia as far as the Russian border in the north and the Great Wall in the west, and illustrates geographical features such as rivers and mountain ranges, as well as major towns, roads, railways, Japanese military bases and shipping links. The whole map is vividly decorated with symbols and miniature pictures showing the mineral resources of the region, crops, animals (horses, sheep, camels etc) and surprisingly detailed illustrations of marine resources - various types of fish and whale species are carefully depicted. The sections covering western Manchuria and Mongolia are particularly richly decorated with images including depictions of Mongolian yurts, religious buildings, an ox cart etc. There are inset tables showing climatic variations, livestock production and shipments of agricultural products, and an inset map depicting the relative size of various urban areas by population.
