The author, Koide Shinjiro published numerous books on the subject of Japanese and Western sewing techniques around the turn of the 20th century. This Taizen (Encyclopedia) runs to 27 issues, although we only have the second part of Volume 14. The cover shows sewing tools in both Japanese and Western styles. In this volume, cutting techniques of Western style girl's dresses are explained in detail and accompanied by many line drawings. Detailed sewing techniques, including how to attach pockets and button hole stitches are also explained.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Western influence in clothing fashion was wide spread and young girls were often seen in pretty Western dresses.
