The numerous novel, Seiyō dōchū hizakurige, was written by Kanagaki Robun 假名垣魯文 [1829-94], following in the footsteps of the very popular comical novel, Tokai dōchū hizakurige 東海道中膝栗毛 [Shank's Mare] by Juppensha Ikku 十返舎一九 [1765-1831]. Juppensha Ikku's series, in which the two protagonists, Yajirōbei and Kitahachi, make an incident-filled journey from Edo to Kyoto along the Tōkaidō Road, was published in the years between 1802 and 1822. In Robun's Seiyō dōchū hizakurige, the protagonists also named, Yajirō and Kitahachi, are the grandsons of original Yajirōbei and Kitahachi and their journey takes them across the world to see the London International Exhibition in 1862. This series was written in the period 1870 - 1876, and runs to a total of 15 parts, each part consisting of two volumes. The final three parts, 12 to 15, were written by Robun's friend, Fusō Kan 總生寛 [1841-94].

In Part 9, published in 1871, describes the protagonists' travel to through Suez and Cairo on the way to London. They went out for dinner at a Western style hotel dining room in Suez and got drunk after drinking too much champagne. They also saw a steam engine for the first time. They had an argument on a horse carriage and injured themselves by falling off from it. Both volumes are illustrated by ukiyo-e artist, Ochiai Yoshiiku 落合芳幾 [1833-1904].
