Stock ID #176014 Attractive illustration prepared for Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan..." of a Buddhist Temple in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The men at bottom right are American sailors who were on Perry's Expedition (1852-54), a strategic voyage which changed the Japanese policy of the imposed isolation (sakoku) dramatically.
