Perhaps better known for his earlier 'Eight Years in Syria' this two volume work surveys the Islamic world from "the Saracen Caliphs in the East, in North Africa and Spain and , down to the foundations of the Ottoman Empire, and following its growth upwards into the reign of Abdul-Mehjid" (Preface). Two volumes: xvi +365 pages; x + 315 pages, 20 x 12 cm, original half calf over marbled boards, marbled fore-edges, black spine title labels lettered in gilt between gilt-ruled raised bands, spines a little scuffed minor loss to the marbled back board of the second volume, scattered foxing more noticeable on the prelims and endpapers, library stamp of the NSW Parliamentary Library to the title page of each volume and to the first chapter of each volume, but a handsome set in good condition. Scarce.
